Tour Highlights: Gobustan Museum and Rock Mountains & Mud Volcanoes
In the beginning of the Gobustan Tour, you will visit The museum of petroglyphs – the so-called Gobustan – a mountain town in the south-east of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, located 60 km from Baku. It was here that the ancient sites of primitive people were found, who left behind a lot of rock paintings – petroglyphs.
These primitive monuments of art reflect the culture, economy, worldview, customs, and traditions of ancient people. Once the sea was splashing right at the foot of these mountains, but then it retreated, leaving distinctive relief marks on the polished boiling rocks.
After accidentally, in the 30s of the XX century, unusual patterns were found on the rocks, their “openly” already more than 6 thousand (on 1000 rocks). Also found ancient primitive dwellings – caves and parking, more than 100 thousand items of material culture. Gobustan petroglyphs belong to different eras. They are made in the period from X – XVIII thousand BC. until the Middle Ages of our era. Since 1966, the territory of Gobustan declared a reserve.
Today it is a real open-air museum. Every year, this stone art gallery is visited by thousands of people from around the world.
By the number of mud volcanoes, Azerbaijan ranks first in the world. There are 350 of them (there are about 800 in the world).
About 70 kilometers from the capital, in the countryside of the town of Gobustan, on the Caspian Sea coast, Gobustan tour visitors come to the volcanoes and enjoy the heat of summer by bathing in the natural mud pools of craters.
Since mud volcanoes are located very far from the main roads, they are not known by many people. These natural mud pools, which are not operated by any institution, are used free of charge by nature lovers who know the road.
To reach the mud volcanoes in Gobustan, it is necessary to walk for about 15-20 minutes after the last point that can be reached by car of Gobustan and Mud Volcanoes tour. After passing through the sandy terrain covered with mud lava, the hills enter the volcanoes which are 50-100 meters apart. After an arduous journey under the sun, tourists climb to small volcanoes and leave themselves in a mud-filled crater pool.
Somewhere 200 meters towards the sea, there is a lonely volcano bigger (the coolest) next to it is a lake with dirty gray water, also therapeutic.
The depth of this large volcano is 3000 meters; the diameter of the crater is three meters. Here are the largest bubbles.
There is a widespread belief that the mud here is good for skin diseases and the immune system and beautifies the skin. Tourists are still active and periodically spraying mud in the crater covering their bodies with gray mud to the enormous fun. If you want to get dirty with volcanic mud (cold mud), then do it better in a large volcano, then go down to the lake and wash yourself. Enjoy the mud bath then enjoy the sea watching. Tourists washing their bodies of mud in the nearby Caspian Sea, swim for a while, sunbathing, and then return by Gobustan and Mud Volcanoes tour car. This is a great place not only for treatment but also for fun.
Before my wife and I made our trip to Azerbaijan, I contacted this company about arranging a couple of private day trips outside of Baku. Fuad was very responsive, and contacted me almost immediately on Whatsapp and by e-mail. He provided several options, including with airport transfers. We decided to do a full-day tour of Gobustan (petroglyphs, mud volcanoes) and Absheron (Fire Temple, Fire Mountain) on one day, which is part of their standard offerings. We also wanted to see something of the Caucasus mountains, and although they usually offer a trip to Gabala, we were interested in Guba and Khinalig, and he said he could arrange something for us there. For the Gobustan and Absheron trip, Fira was our guide and Tair, who also met us at the airport, was our driver...both were really friendly, helpful, and informative, and we enjoyed our day with them. It was good to go with them on a tour for these sites, as it would have been very difficult for us to reach these places without a guide and driver. The trip to the mountains via Guba does not seem to be part of the company's standard tour packages though, and was a bit more improvised. The driver and his friend (both off-duty police officers, it turned out ,who spoke a little English, but could also communicate with us in Russian), were friendly and helpful, but their job was mainly to get us where we were going and back, which they did safely. The high-elevation mountain scenery an hour outside of Guba was spectacular and worth seeing, but be prepared: unless you make reservations for a home-stay, hiking trip, meal or something similar in the small shepherd's village of Khinalig, you will basically arrive, look around a little bit, and then get back in your car and head down the mountain. Having said that, I was glad we could get even this brief glimpse of these mountains, and appreciated that our driver was friendly, good and safe. Overall, we had a good time in Azerbaijan, and were glad that Guide Azerbaijan could help us experience some of the country outside of Baku. Brad B July 30, 2018

I made contact with Guided Azerbaijan just the day before I wanted a tour and Murad was able to create a great private tour for me...we visited the mud volcanos, Gobustan museum and site, then went for tea Azerbaijan style. Murad was always checking in with me and accommodating. He is informative and I learned far more from his explanations than if I had visited these sites alone-even in the museum...in addition his photography and capturing of videos - to capture my memories - was fantastic! Highly recommended. Roddy23 May 19, 2019
We did a 2 hour walking tour and a half day tour of Gobastan - both with Naira as our guide. The tours were great .. Baku and Gobastan are both amazing. Amazing history combined with stunning nature. Naira was a great guide and we had a lot of fun with her leading us around. She is very knowledgeable and is clearly very passionate about her country. Loved the Lada drive to the mud volcanoes! The tour company was very professional and responsive to all our needs. Great company that I will definitely use again when we're in Baku next. Scott M June 3, 2019
