City Guba – one of the favorite places to visit tourists in our Guba Khinalig tour. Having passed only two hours in the northern direction of the country, you find yourself in a historic city, founded in the 4th century, famous for its ancient mosques, famous for its unique carpets. Only in the Guba district can be found original villages – a kind of open-air ethnographic museum, in each of which the peoples living in them speak their unique language. And also Guba is called the land of apples – gardens stretching for kilometers with the most delicious and juicy fruits made him famous far beyond the borders of Azerbaijan.
Representatives of several small nations live in Guba, and therefore every village there is an ethnographic museum under the open sky. The local peoples have their unique language: Khaputly, Kryzia, Jack, Khinalig. Only a few houses have survived in these small villages, and the largest of them is the mountain village of Khinalig, which is included in the list of UNESCO historical monuments of world importance. With its inaccessibility, unique language, unique architectural appearance, and culture, the village attracts tourists from all over the world. Since 2007, Khinalig has been declared an ethnographic reserve. The most unusual here is the houses located on the top of the mountain in the form of an amphitheater. They look like eagle’s nests: built on a slope close to each other, here the roof of one house serves as a courtyard for another located above.
The village of Gachresh is one of the most picturesque and lively corners of the Lip. The peculiarity of this area is given by the mysterious forest through which the road to Gachresh passes. It seems that the rays of the sun never penetrate this dense forest. In the magical forest, as in childhood, “the trees are so big” that the crown is not visible. Along the road, there are recreation areas and restaurants where you can sample the local cuisine. If you go further, you find yourself in the Gudyalchay canyons: steep ascents and descents of the road pass through the steep walls of the gorge. Even in the most unbearable summer heat, it is always cold here – mountain streams of the bubbling Gudyalchay River with a roar go down and amaze with their grandeur.
The red settlement is called the village of millionaires because it is from here come many wealthy Jews. And although they live abroad, nevertheless, each of them has their own home in Krasnaya Sloboda, millionaires also donate to the local synagogue and participate in social projects. In turn, the Red Sloboda is the only community of mountain Jews in the CIS.
Guba district is the largest center of carpet weaving in Azerbaijan. The carpets woven here adorn the museums and private galleries of many countries of the world. Thus, the Golu Chichi carpet made by Guba craftswomen in 1712 is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
On the way back you will see the handmade carpet factory called “Gadim Guba” which means Old Guba a factory that women of Guba city are making very beautiful handmade carpets on a 5-6 mounts period. It is also possible to order a carpet with a picture you want handwoven on it.
We had booked a weeklong trip with Guided Azerbaijan and planned several excursions with them. We had particularly outstanding service from Lamia in planning our trip and with our driver, Tahir, who was with us the entire time. While we did not do this exact tour outlined here, we instead planned a customized half day trip to Quba and to the beautiful Candy Cane Mountains. Unfortunately, our guide became sick, but we could still go ahead with the driver, who was so helpful, and Guided Azerbaijan was very responsive and refunded the cost of the guide. We had an especially fun time visiting the carpet making center. We were shown how the carpets are made and allowed to try ourselves. We did not leave without making a purchase of a stunning silk rug that we will cherish.
Just back from an amazing tour to Khinaliq Village, and wow, was it a journey to remember! The trip was thrilling, thanks to our expert driver, Mr. Kamran, who navigated the mountain roads with such professionalism, making us feel safe and comfortable throughout. Our tour guide, Ms. Senuber, was incredibly helpful, enriching the experience with her knowledge and kindness. Having lunch with the locals in the village was more than just a meal; it was an immersion into the rich culture and traditions of Khinaliq. The warmth and hospitality of the villagers were heartwarming, and the food was simply delicious authentic flavors that you can't find anywhere else. Highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience.
The journey to Khilaniq was beautiful scenic. I would put this experince at the very top position among all the experiences in Azerbaizan. This should not be missed.
We had an amazing tour with guided Azerbaijan to Quba and into the mountains towards Khinalig. We took a private tour with driver and guide that enabled us to tune the itinerary and stop times to our preferences. the weather was perfect and the mountains were white from the first snow that came down a day or 2 before our tour. The tour was organized very well, everything was on time and Ulya the guide and driver were great !!
Khinaliq was fantastic! Our guide and driver organised an extra driver as the bridge is destroyed and only a Niva can go up. We loved this trip!
